Once you’re here:
- You will pull through the gate on Raleigh Street
- Honk your horn with one short beep
- Someone will come out to greet you and look at what you have
- We will help you unload your material
- It gets weighed on one of our certified scales (We’re the only scrap yard with certified scales in the charlotte area.)
- A ticket is written up (have your ID ready)
- You are directed to a pay room where one of our Customer Service Cashiers will get you paid the highest prices with a smile

A Bakers Dozen Ways To Save on Gas On Your Way To Southern Resources
No special license required — Just a valid US government issued ID
- Buy gas on WednesdaysGas prices are statistically the cheapest on Wednesdays, not always the case, but over the course of a year, you’ll average out better.
- Buy gas during the coolest times of the day During the cooler temperatures of morning & evening is the time gasoline is densest. Keep in mind – gas pumps measure volumes of gasoline, not densities of fuel concentration. You are charged according to “volume of measurement”, so you’ll be getting more gas for your money!
- Don’t top off your tank Trust the auto-shutoff. Overfilling leads to wasted gas.
- Be sure your gas cap is tight “Improperly seated gas caps allow 147 million gallons of fuel to vaporize every year in the U.S.”
- Be wary of gas-saving products The U.S. Federal Trade Commission warns that most gas-saving products don’t work. “Be wary of any gas-saving claims for automotive devices or oil and gas additives. Even for the few gas-saving products that have been found to work, the savings have been small.”
- Tune Up A clean air filter can improve gas mileage as much as 20% ! New spark plugs can can improve gas mileage by 12% !
- Properly inflate tires Under-inflated & or misaligned tires are dangerous & equal more friction, which can reduce gas mileage as much as 25% !
- Use the lowest level Octane Your car most likely won’t show any difference in performance.
- Don’t idle Turn off your engine if you’ll be idling for more than thirty seconds. Starting your vehicle does use a burst of fuel, but not as much as allowing the engine to idle too long.
- Slow & Steady wins the gas race Assume that for every 5mph over 60mph is like paying $0.20 more per gallon. Also, the less you have to stop, the better your gas mileage. Make it a game to catch all of the green lights. Laugh at the other guy as he sprints from red to red.
- Use Cruise Control when you can Several scientific studies have shown that the best way to improve fuel economy is to accelerate slowly & to brake over a longer distance. use your cruise control accelerator to speed-up smoother.
- Drive Less w/ a GPS Get a GPS app or unit, make a route to pick-up scrap, & then save the smaller parcels of scrap as longs as you can until you have One big load. One trip to the scrap yard with 10 times the scrap is 1/10th the gas of 10 trips to the scrap yard with 10 small loads.
- Ditch your Fat Friends Extra weight takes extra gas & your fat friend probably doesn’t help you load the scrap & probably always wants to stop at the Taco Bell on the way to Southern Resources & just costs you more money as you idle in line wasting gas & then you have to buy him 4 stuft burritos & believe me, that ain’t the gas you’re trying to save.
